Hemming appointment

Hi Reader

New Sewing Machine

I've just acquired my first-ever cover stitch machine.

It's similar to an overlocker, using four threads to cover raw edges, but it creates two lines of straight stitches on one side, with the 'overlocking' threads underneath.

This is perfect for hemming jersey garments in one pass.

Check out the hems on your shop-bought tees and leggings—that’s cover stitch!

I've had the machine for a few weeks, and, I'm a bit embarrassed to admit, it's still in the box!

So, I've scheduled a 'getting to know you' session to set it up and start experimenting.

Getting a new machine is exciting, whether it's your first, an upgrade, or an addition.

But it can be daunting, especially if it's your first.

If you're hesitant to start, here are three tips to help you get going and achieve great results:

1. Make a sewing appointment

Schedule time in your diary to sew. Blocking out an hour keeps other tasks from taking over and prevents sewing from feeling overwhelming.

2. The Key to Success: Practice, Practice, Practice!

Begin with simple projects like an apron, then move on to a sleeveless tank top. Once you're comfortable, add sleeves, and try a simple gathered skirt. With each new garment, introduce a slightly more complex element.

Remember, your first project might not be perfect, but that's okay! Each piece will teach you something new, and you'll improve with every stitch.

3. Consider Joining a Class

If possible, take an in-person sewing class. You'll gain valuable insights and techniques that aren't easily found online.

Can't attend a class? Check out my Sew Like A Pro Kit. It's designed for beginners and improvers, who want to unlock the secrets to sewing like a pro without a meltdown, or spending hours sifting through YouTube videos.

The Sew Like A Pro Kit is available now at a special launch price of £19.

Already have Sew Like a Pro Kit? Treat yourself to some sewing time this weekend, log in, and start sewing!

scrap garment recreations

Hi Reader, As creatives, we're often guilty of taking on too much. We get caught up in the excitement of new projects, the thrill of social media, and the pressure to constantly produce content. But sometimes, it's essential to take a step back and reassess our priorities. For me, that moment came recently when I realised I was spreading myself too thin. Between teaching in-person classes, working at Chiltern Open Air Museum, costuming for Big Fish, running Sew Bee Yourself, fitting in family...

Tips for sewing sweatshirting

Hi Reader, I sat on my sofa, just minutes before the class was about to start. I could hear my inner voice whispering all sorts of reasons why I shouldn't attend. "I'm too tired," "I just want to crash out and watch TV," "I can't be bothered," "it's going to be too difficult," "I won't be able to keep up," "the trainer will poke fun at my unfitness"... the list went on. But I knew that if I gave in to those excuses, I'd be letting myself down. I'd invested in this program to improve my...

Hi Reader, I'm super thrilled to share the exciting news that my scrappy red dress has been shortlisted for The Stitch Festival's dressmaking competition in the upcycled/repurposed category! My eco-friendly garment was crafted from a bucket load of fabric scraps from past garment and costume projects, and I'm honoured my work be recognised. But what really sets this dress apart is the unforgettable memories I've made while wearing it - like the time I wore it to a friend's wedding and...
