From 80’s Orange Hair to Upcycling Inspiration ✂️🧡

Hi Reader,

We are on a roll with themed parties at the moment.

Last week was 90’s and our costumes were inspired by Neo and Trinity from The Matrix.

This week was 80’s.

Our inspiration was Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart from Eurythmics.

The main pieces came from Ricky Player’s wardrobe, but the accessories made the outfit.

The red scarf, trilby hat, feature necklace, pink DMs, belt… and of course the orange sprayed hair.

I got the orange hair spray from Amazon and was slightly doubtful I’d get a proper bright orange on my dark brown hair.

It took a few layers.

I got the desired effect.

My hair felt quite crispy.

And I was discreetly brushing off orange dandruff-like flakes from my top all evening 🤣

It washed out well though, which I made sure to do before bed. I didn’t want to risk waking up to orange bedsheets!

This reminded me that in costuming, it’s often the accessories that finish the outfit.

And it’s exactly the same in everyday dressing.

It’s not just about being comfortable.

A well-thought-out accessory or a small tweak can take something from “meh” to polished.

And it needn’t be expensive.

That’s what this week’s blog post is all about.

Practical ways to upcycle clothes and transform garments you already own.

Sewing Tips

Upcycling Quick Fixes

Before you seam rip or cut the whole garment apart, experiment with small upgrades.

• Swap basic buttons for something bold or unexpected
• Add contrast binding to a neckline or cuff
• Remove a collar and reshape the neckline
• Add side panels for shape (or extra room)
• Try visible mending and turn repair into design

Small changes. Big difference.

This might be your nudge to revisit the Ultimate Upcycling Fashion Bundle.

If you already have it, go back and flick through the ideas.

Pick one.

Just one.

And try it this week.

Don’t have it yet?

The Ultimate Upcycling Fashion Bundle is 80 transformation ideas plus practical guidance to stop that “What should I do with this?” feeling.

You can grab it here:

Style isn’t about buying more.

It’s about looking at what you already own and asking,

“What could this become?”

Sometimes it’s better buttons.

Sometimes it’s orange hair 😜

Have a good week

eldest in the prom dress I made her

Hi Reader, ‘No mum’. That was my eldest daughter’s response to the suggestion I make her prom dress. Oof. That was crushing. The thing is, while my kids were growing up, I hadn’t really sewn much apart from rushed World Book Day costumes from random bits lying around. She had absolutely no idea that before she was born, I used to make competition ballroom dance dresses and bridal gowns. She probably imagined I was about to whip something up from musty old curtains or worn out sheets from the...

Winslet trouser make

Hi Reader, I was recently approached by Winslet Patterns to become an affiliate for them. I only ever share products, tools, and patterns that I have actually used myself and would genuinely be happy to recommend. So before saying yes, I had a proper look through the collection, asked one of my daughters to choose a style she’d actually wear, and sewed it up. She chose a pair of high waisted wide leg trousers in a green linen mix from my stash. I was really pleased with how they came...
